Sierra Leone - Gbendembu Wesleyan Bible School

What We Can Do...
We desire to partner financially with the National Wesleyan Church of Sierra Leone in order to provide scholarships for students to learn at the Gbendembu Wesleyan Bible School.
Through their education they will become pastors and missionaries, impacting people for God’s Kingdom.

What You Can Do . . .
First, please pray that God will provide for the needs of the students at Gbendembu Wesleyan Bible School. They are our brothers and sisters in Christ, who the Lord loves as much as He loves us.
Secondly, please ask the Lord if you should partner with the school financially, and if so,
what He would want you to give to provide scholarships for these students.
If you feel God is calling you to give a financial gift, please make your check out to Crosswinds and write Sierra Leone—Gbendembu in the memo line. Your financial gifts will be forwarded to Global Partners, the missionary organization of the Wesleyan Church, where they will be sent to the National Wesleyan Church of Sierra Leone for Scholarships at Gbendembu Wesleyan Bible School.

Background
The Gbendembu Wesleyan Bible School opened in 1920 and has been crucial for the spread of the Gospel in central and northern Sierra Leone. The school is located about a half hour from the city of Makenie. Over the years many Houghton College alumni have worked at the school.
During the ten-year civil war, a number of the school’s buildings were destroyed as people fled for their lives. Though most of the buildings destroyed have not been rebuilt, the Gbendembu Wesleyan Bible School has continued to train pastors for ministry.
The current global financial crisis has hit hard at Gbendembu, making the cost of tuition insurmountable for most of the students. When the Crosswinds team visited there in Oober 2008, the number of students had decreased to only 12, and only one application had been received for the 2009 year.
It costs $600 per year for a single student and $800 per year for a married couple to attend. We believe that in order for God’s redemptive word to spread through Sierra Leone and into their neighboring country of Guinea, nationals must be trained as pastors and missionaries.
